Includes bibliographies. My aim has been to give an outline of our present knowledge, which of course is usually in advance of the work of pioneers. The number of references to any writer in the index is thus rather a testimony to the recency of his achievements than to the actual part which he has taken in promoting the science. Otherwise, there would have been many more references to the work of Perrey, Mallet and Milne.
